10 Steps to Your Instrument Rating
1. Compare Our Course
Our course is designed to be completed in 14 days (10 days actual training plus the checkride day). The fixed price for the course  includes 14 nights stay at one of the Big Island’s finest oceanfront hotels. Your course fee also includes up to 25 hours in one of our fully IFR Cessna or Piper aircraft, as well as unlimited simulator and instructor time for the full 10 training days, and all the course publications and study materials .

We assign one instructor exclusively to you during your stay, so you can be sure that all of your time will be productively spent. Hawaii Flight Academy   is an FAA-certified Part 141 school, so our course syllabi and all of our record keeping conform to the FAA’s highest standards. The prerequisites for our accelerated course are as follows: a completed Instrument Written Test,  and at least 47 hours of cross-county PIC time.

2. Choose a Training Date
We like to start each Accelerated Instrument course on a Monday. In order to ensure that we can dedicate an aircraft and instructor to each student, we accept only a limited number of students into our intensive courses at any one time. For this reason, we’ll ask for a deposit of $2,000, which we’ll put on account for you to hold your training date. Your deposit is fully refundable should you need to cancel for any reason as long as we receive advance  notice of at least 30 days.

Since space is limited, we recommend that you call and set a tentative course date now. If necessary, you can always revise your training times at a later date. Once we’ve received your deposit, our service representative will be happy to assist with arranging for a car rental or anything else that you would find helpful as you plan for your trip to the Islands.

3. Receive Advance Training Materials
Shortly after confirming your training date, you will receive advance preparation materials, and arrival information to help prepare you for your stay during your training in Hawaii.

4. Pass Your Written Test
We require that you complete your written test prior to beginning the course. In this way, we can devote the full training time to the practical aspects of earning your rating. For students who are not in the vicinity of a testing facility, we do provide computerized testing at our Hilo office for written test completion prior to training.

5. FLY to the Beautiful Big Island of Hawaii
Our island is less developed than Oahu, Maui, and Kauai, with wide open stretches that are perfect for practice areas. We maintain two campuses for our training programs. Our original location is at the Hilo Airport on the east side of the island, where our students can frequently encounter real instrument meteorological conditions. Our newer facility is located at Keahole Airport in Kona, on the west side of the island, where the weather is nearly always sunny and warm.

We want every moment of your stay with us to be enjoyable. Two weeks prior to your arrival, our staff will reconfirm your hotel and rental car arrangements, to make sure that everything goes smoothly upon arrival. You can expect to be met at the airport by one of our friendly staff, who will present you with an arrival orientation package, local maps, and assistance with confirming your transportation and accommodation arrangements. We encourage our customers to bring along traveling companions, who are welcome to stay at no additional charge!

6. Begin Training
We’ve been conducting accelerated courses since 1992, and have maintained a passing ratio of over 90%. During that time we have continued to improve and modify our training syllabus, and we’ve become experts in presenting all of the materials that are the most challenging for students. We make extensive use of our in-house simulator to help students get used to the scanning techniques, flow patterns, and the entirely new way of approaching flying that instrument training represents.

You will be assigned a sole, experienced professional instructor for the duration of your course. You will work approximately eight hours per day with your instructor, in intensive ground, simulator, and flight sessions. You will find that you and your instructor will quickly become friends, and will most likely share lunch together, along with occasional end-of-day bull sessions. Any of our staff members will be happy to suggest and arrange activities for our students’ traveling companions.

7. Enjoy Hawaii
You will find that things are done differently in Hawaii. We are proud of our heritage of "Aloha." To us, this means treating all our clients as "family" rather than just mere customers. We purposefully schedule weekends off   so that you can enjoy our beautiful island at your own pace. During the cross-country phase of training, we encourage you to bring along any interested traveling companions. Frequently our cross-country flights will include a picnic lunch at a quiet, remote, seaside airstrip.  Your welfare and enjoyment are our primary concern from the second you arrive until the moment you depart our island.

8. Pass Your Flight Test!
We schedule your license checkride with an FAA examiner well in advance of your start date, generally on the last day of your course.  Our Chief Flight Instructor  works very closely with our instructors to ensure that no student is recommended for a checkride until they meet the school's rigid standards. Each student must, of course, perform to the FAA's standards for each flight test. Since our instructors are carefully guided, each recommended student has a very high likelihood of passing the test on the first attempt.  In a worse-case scenario, in the unlikely event the checkride is unsuccessful, and schedule/travel constraints preclude a second exam, of course our client WILL receive an updated application and signed recommendation form, which may be presented to any FAA examiner at his/her local airport, and complete the final step of the license process there!

Occasionally, a student develops a case of "stage fright" and is unable to perform a portion of the test satisfactorily. In that case, we immediately provide additional training to correct the deficiency, and reschedule an additional test, often for the following day. Because of this slight possibility, we highly recommend that our clients allow at least one additional day beyond our published course length for additional training and retesting if necessary. Our goal is to send you home with your rating!

9. Relax and Appreciate Your Accomplishment
Many of our clients choose to remain on our island for a few additional days after completing training. We are happy to arrange for additional accommodation days at our very special low rates (generally less than half the normal tourist rates). We encourage the use of our aircraft after training for solo cross-country rentals, and can help arrange day or overnight excursions to any of the other 7 beautiful islands in our chain.

10. Return Home and Use Your Skills
Our course is designed to create REAL instrument pilots, not just to issue new pieces of paper for pilots’ wallets. Our school maintains rigid internal training standards that demand that each student's proficiency be far above the minimum standards for passing the practical test. We want our clients to return home with confidence in their new abilities, and with the necessary tools to continue to increase their proficiency through self-directed practice.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if takes longer than normal for me to be ready for the flight test?
Based on years of teaching experience, our training program virtually guarantees success for our students within the flight time maximums for each course. In a very few isolated instances students have required additional training time. In those cases, we provide special discounted hourly rates for completion.

I already have some flight instruction; can I receive a discount from the course fee?
Our past experiences have shown that most students require the full course of training to reach the proficiency standards we expect. For students with extensive prior training, we are happy to design a completion course, and train on an hourly basis.

Must I pass the written test before beginning the training?
Our accelerated training course is specifically designed for students who have already passed the written test. We are happy to provide training assistance for the written at an additional cost, prior to beginning the flight training course.

Do you guarantee that I will pass the checkride and attain the rating?
We can’t guarantee your personal performance. However, we are proud of our 90% first-time pass rate.  In some rare scases, for a variety of reasons, a client may NOT be ready for the flight test within the standard course time frame.  We are always ready to provide additional training as necessary in such case. If a client fails the flight test, we provide additional instruction and arrange for a second test.

Are there any other hidden costs?
Other than your meals, entertainment, and the flight examiner fee, all costs are included.
