I have noticed that helicopter flights are almost twice the cost of a comparable airplane tour.   That must mean that helicopters are better, right?

Airplanes have much lower operating costs than helicopters.  We prefer to pass the cost savings on to our customers, and provide an equal or superior experience for half the cost.

But don't helicopters fly lower and hover over interesting sites?

Because of safety and noise abatement considerations, the FAA enacted a regulation which requires all tour aircraft (including helicopters) to remain at least 1500 feet above the terrain at all times.  Island Hoppers has been awarded a special deviation by the FAA to descend lower.  We operate at minimum altitudes of 1000 feet, which provides an excellent viewing and photography vantage point, yet does not compromise safety.

Aloft!

Are aerial flights over the volcano safe?

The entire Hawaii aerial tour industry has an enviable safety record, with incidents substantially below national averages.  Island Hoppers has one of the Hawaii air tour industry's best safety records, since its inception in 1986.  This is due primarily to our high maintenance standards, with maintenance intervals performed at twice the legally required rates.  In addition, every pilot on our staff is also a licensed FAA Instructor, possessing superior demonstrated skills and judgement.  We are an FAA certified air carrier, and meet stringent performance and maintenance standards.

Will I be able to take photos or video during the flight?

Island Hoppers is the only Big Island aerial tour company to provide window seats for EVERY passenger.   Our intimate, 4 or 7 seat aircraft allow our pilots to fly slowly over interesting sites, yet can maintain higher speeds to cover more of the island in less time.

Can I just wait and reserve a tour after I arrive on the island?

We are always happy to attempt to accommodate all last-minute requests for seats.  However, our tours are very popular, and are generally booked up as much as a week in advance.  We highly recommend advance reservations.  As a special incentive, clients who reserve a flight at least 7 days in advance receive our aerial volcano video free!

How is the weather in Hawaii this time of the year?

Our weather is near-perfect all year-round.  Not too warm, not too cool.  See for yourself below:
